Revit Outsourcing & Overflow Support

How to write a good scope for outsourced Revit work

A usable brief states source information, inclusions, exclusions, Revit version, deliverables, revisions and the deadline. “Develop the model” is not a scope.

A good scope for outsourced Revit work is a production instruction, not a description of the building. The receiving team should be able to open the files, see what is in and out, and know what “done” looks like. If that cannot be written down, the job is not ready to quote.

A practical briefing checklist

  • Source information — drawings, current Revit file, registered point cloud, markups, and which issue is current
  • Model areas — buildings, storeys, zones; what is omitted
  • Exclusions — furniture, services, landscape, areas with no information
  • Level of detail — how far geometry and documentation should be taken
  • Revit version — the year the office will keep using
  • Documentation — drawing list, titleblock, annotation, or model-only
  • Revision allowance — what is included in the quotation, and what is a new instruction
  • Deadline — when the practice needs the files, and who will review them
  • Deliverables — native .RVT, PDF set, optional IFC, and any naming convention

Source information

Send what the package actually depends on. Mixed drawing issues in one folder, or a cloud without a modelling note, produce questions that should have been in the brief. If CAD does not exist, say that the source is PDF and expect more qualification.

Inclusions, exclusions and detail

List the work. A modeller should not have to infer whether interiors, roofs or a full sheet set are included. Detail should be described in project terms — envelope, internal partitions, documented openings — rather than an unexplained LOD number copied from another appointment.

Version, documentation, revisions and deadline

The delivery year has to be agreed before production. If sheets are required, include the drawing list. If they are not, say the deliverable is the model only. Revisions inside the agreed scope belong in the quotation; later design changes do not. A deadline without a named reviewer on the practice side is only half a programme.

Questions

Say so. The quotation can cover a defined first package, and later sheets can be a separate scope rather than an unspoken extra.
