CAD to Revit: a practical guide for architecture practices

CAD to Revit is rebuilding native Revit elements from drawings — not a one-click file conversion. The model can only be as coordinated as the source information.

When an existing DWG set needs to become a working Revit model, the quality of the source information determines how much can be modelled confidently. CAD to Revit is not a change of file extension. Someone has to read the drawings and rebuild the documented building as native Revit elements, to an agreed scope, in an agreed version.

What CAD to Revit actually involves

Revit can bring a DWG in as a live link or as an embedded import. Both are drawing references. The CAD geometry is still lines. A Revit wall is a modelled object with a type, a height and a location line, and it can host openings. Exploding the CAD inside Revit usually makes the file heavier without producing elements the team can schedule or edit.

What information is required

Plans for each level, matching elevations and sections, and any schedules that define openings or doors. DWG or DXF is usually clearer because the linework can be measured. PDF can be used when that is what exists, provided the sheets can be scaled. State the Revit year the office will keep using, and what should be modelled versus omitted.

If the source is DWG

Useful DWGs have a known unit, a current issue, and enough levels and dimensions to set the model out. Xrefs should be bound or sent with the set so the underlay is complete. Layers help if they still mean something; a file full of unused layers does not. Cleanup in CAD makes a better reference. It does not repair drawings that disagree with each other.

What can and cannot be inferred

A modeller can take dimensions, levels and construction that are shown. They should not invent storey heights, “correct” a plan that disagrees with a section, or add linings that are not documented. Those are design decisions. Where the drawings conflict, the question goes back to the practice.

Typical workflow

The drawings are reviewed, the scope is written, and the fee is quoted before production. Levels and grids are set out first, then the documented envelope, partitions and openings. Views in Revit are then cuts of that model rather than a second drawing set that can drift apart. The practice reviews the issue; agreed revisions are completed; the native .RVT is delivered in the quoted version.

Deliverables

For RVTForm work the primary deliverable is a native .RVT file. Views, sheets, schedules or IFC export are included only if they are written into the quotation. A Revit model is not automatically a BIM information-management deliverable unless that is specified separately.

Revit versions

Name the year the receiving practice will edit. A model saved in a newer release cannot be opened in an older one. There is no previous-year Save As for project files. Agreeing the year after modelling is finished is too late.

How accurate can the model be?

Accuracy follows the source information. Modelling from drawings is not surveying. A dimensioned, coordinated set can support a model that matches those drawings. An unscaled PDF, or a plan that disagrees with a section, cannot. Existing buildings that have moved since they were drawn add a further uncertainty that drawings do not resolve. Tolerances should be treated as a project decision, not as a blanket promise. Assumptions should be listed so the practice can accept or replace them.

Common problems with poor source drawings

Unscaled PDFs, mixed revisions, plans that do not match sections, missing roof information, and DWGs full of unused layers all change how much can be quoted with confidence. Cleanup in CAD helps the underlay. It does not repair uncoordinated design drawings.

Questions

No. Revit can link or import CAD linework as a reference. Native walls, floors and openings still have to be modelled from the drawings.

Yes, if the PDFs are complete enough to interpret — usually dimensioned or plotted to a known scale. Limitations should be identified before quoting.

The version the receiving practice will edit. A newer Revit file cannot be opened in an older release, so the delivery year has to be agreed before modelling starts.

Missing dimensions increase inference and risk. They should be listed during review rather than guessed into the model.

It depends on drawing quality, building complexity, agreed detail and programme. A delivery date is confirmed with the quotation, not as a generic promise.
